back in july, before Edit was born i made a sleeping bag out of an old, un-used KLF t-shirt that the baby-father had once worn. now it was destined for the dump (or ebay if he could be arsed, but probably not) so instead we made something useful - as seen here

now someone's found the blog post and taken the time to post a comment about how i should be punished for destroying such a rarity. Oh please. punished. how are these people allowed out and about?

just think - with KLFs reputation of burning a million quid, the act of us changing the use of something that wasn't being used or cherished into something that has a value and is a source of joy makes people so upset as to waste time on it. i have to say i do enjoy it!

it's most certainly rushed past, this whole pregnancy thing. i'm in the absolute last weeks of it. the baby could be born any day now and we've still to decide on a shortlist of names. even less decided is what name of our two surnamnes to come first...

here in stockholm it's really summer. about 27 degrees most days. i'm glad we don't live in the city centre, that we do have a bit of a breeze outside. i would like to be able to take a nap outside, but for that i'll have to travel to my parents i reckon.

This is what we've gone for -a BRIO Happy. in the beginning we're gonna put a cot thing that we can carry up the stairs without waking the bairn. It's gonna be delivered in three weeks. We can't put it together in case something happens to the baby rendering the pram obselete we won't get a refund if it's assembled. Oh, how will i be able to NOT put it together?! It's gonna be sitting there for the whole five weeks I'm gonna be at home waiting to pop!
I'm gonna need to find something else to focus on... Like knitting a pram cosy!

there's a lot whirling about outside - leaves, plastic bags, birds. the spring winds are really at it here in stockholm. my mind's a bit of a whirlwind as well. big emotions - happy, sad, angry, euphoric - all the time. but i'm chalking it all down to "the normality of pregnancy". since everything is more or less normal when you mention it to the mid-wife i'm thinking the emotions are too.

I don't know if all these news and uncertaintees in the world is making me mora fatalistic or if it's information overload.

The Fukushima nuclear power plant is slowly falling apart, and the reports are that no-one knows how bad it will be. the one thing they are certain of is that it is bad. At the same time we're all getting ready to remember April 26th 1986 when Chernobyl exploded. That happened, and most of us in the world survived, lived on, made babies, died in car crashes, in heart attacks or by crossing the road. maybe the radioactive spread from harrisburg or chernobyl has an inpact on our lives in ways we can't comprehend. maybe it didn't. everywhere in the world, every day, every minute, every second a life is shattered, another is made, and yet another is unaffected by whatever is happening in society.

and in all of this, we, thousands of miles away from the huge tragedy of an earthquake, a tsunami, an armed revolt have the unjuste need to be reassured and informed that our sheltered lives aren't affected.

the purpose of life is death. in one way or another we will all die. this is just fact. the tragedy is that when one person dies, others live on. that's the tragedy and what we need to deal with. and how do we deal with it? by ignoring the fact completely, by thinking we have anything to do with our fate.

"life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans."

i was asked how i felt bringing a life into this world now with everything happening in the world. i really don't feel that that would change anything. i have no control over it. and to think i do would only be foolish and stupid. not in the lest, very disappointing.

it's enough for me to deal with the disappointment of not getting a job, or getting a job and not liking it, not feeling loved, or feeling loved but not loving back. to then add not being able to control the world around me - well, what would be the point of living?

"give me the power to accept the things i cannot change, the strength to change the things i can and the knowledge to know which is which."

that's is enough for me to focus on and for me to deal with.

it's been a while, hasn't it? and guess what, there's news. in july i will become two. we've seen it. it has two arms, two legs, a head and no cleft lip. as it should be i suppose.

roller coaster emotions, fear and utter joy. i love the planning of what buggy to get, how to decorate and when to go on materinty leave. all that makes the abstract event of giving birth to a new life seem real-er. or at least less unreal.

we made it back yesterday after 10 hours in the car and 90 minutes on the train, tram and bus. It was a bit of a chore since I managed to REALLY squash one of the fingers on my right hand the other day. That's what you get when you try to be a good auntie and make sure the nephew doesn't get his fingers caught whilst putting together a collapsible table. It's now a lighter shade of purple and I managed to knit on my Moebius head scarf today so we can all relax now!
(some hours after it happened and i'd stopped wailing about the pain, my sister said "will you be able to knit?!" and honestly, i nearly started crying again! thinking about how to write, type, brush teeth, dress, undress, whatever with this painful finger didn't even move me to tears....)

it's been two weeks of traipsing about a bit and living out of a bag, but it's been good. tomorrow my cousin Klara's coming for a few days and I'm already excited. we're very similar - both in a good and bad way. when we're happy, we're exstatic! when one of us is tired or grumpy, we're both REALLY grumpy. we just need to be honest with each other and so far we've not taken it too far, but who knows!

our roof is being re-tiled and there are some kind of safety fences up there. there's been a really gusty wind all day which seems to have shifted something loose and between the winds and somthing loose i reckon it's gonna be a long night. I really hope the roofers work saturdays, otherwise it's gonna be a long weekend!

it's been the first day of my three-week vacation. it was really christened last night when, after a lovely meal at vurma and a stroll from there to slussen, me, R, my auntie and cousin took a break at the quayside and marveled at the fact that it was still 25 degrees at 10pm.

So much so that my cousin and I decided there and then to go swimming! So we went home, changed into our cozzies and took the bikes to Vinterviken, for the season, wrongly named Bay of Winter.

We arrived at bit after 11 pm, found a secluded little bay and got in. The water was even warmer than the air! it was wonderful but then the bats started their evening meal of gnats close to the surface of the water which freaked me out. I tried to blind them with my torch but my cousin very calmly said "Emma, they're more or less blind." Ah, the fresh knowledge of 19-year-olds!

Anyway, that midnight swim was almost evangelical. It was like I've met god and she/he said everything will be just fine. I've been baptised in the holy waters of holiday. Or holYday....
Today we've been packing and emptying the larder for our fortnight in Jansjö, R's parents' summer home. I'm hoping for an equally spiritual experiece in the waters of Jansjön, the Lake of Jan.

it's been a day off for me, although it comes with a price and that price is working sunday.
i did have a nice day tho, got a new hair do, with a little asymmetrical thing going on .

then i got a mystery package to pick up. my honorary cousin, or rather my boyf's cousin, had sent me six balls of icelandic wool that she'd bought while working there, but that she'd ratehr give to me instead than having it laying around her house. now i just need to figure out what to make for her, as a surprise i thought.

and then, to top it all off, i finished a little hat for a baby to be, so if you're reading this gayle, look away or the surprise will be ruined.

well, it could have been worse i suppose, but everything just piled on top of me so by firday morning i had my usual response to well-meaning colleagues asking me how i was - tears. which made them nervous and even more concerned, sending other colleagues to check on me, very nice, but which made me fight back even more tears...
between a non-existent temp, a trip to uppsala, slight feeling of the swiney and the nobel prizes i really did not perform as well as i should have.
time now for me to head over to my sister and celebrate her brithday instead!

(btw - this week saw my two-year anniversary of being back in sweden. how quick was that!)

I've not been here since I came back from Geordie-land last Sunday, but that is by no means a reflection on the splendid time I had. Friends, old and new-born, work-related, knitting-related and living-related, I managed to meet so many of you!
And it was a lovely treat to show off my absolute favourites in both Carlisle and Newcastle to my Swedish colleagues - the Bridge Hotel is now their favourite too!

We learnt a lot on the trip - not just how the BBC work, but what they focus on and what they dont, like image galleries. In some ways it felt like Swedish Radio was a bit left behind, but for the most part I was really excited that what we do do, like having an award-winning mobile site, is worth so much because it's us at the New Media department who come up with it. The 40-or-so strong department! At the Beeb, they've got staff coming out of their ears and they still don't bother that much with a mobile site!
It was good that the Swedish team were asked questions by BBC-people about our organisation as well as us asking them questions - it's important I think to show a bit of curiosity and to be shown how things can be done in other places. The BBC aren't very good at that. Swedish Radio on the other hand HAVE to.

But when you get to spend time with the most talented and friendly people, I am more than happy to be working for an organisation that can be bold and humble enough to say "teach me, inspire me".

had a great birthday yesterday where I got the camera I was saving up for (wonderful, wonderful boyf!) and other lovely stuff and attention.

in two weeks i'll be joining my colleagues to England! To Newcastle and Carlisle. You might ask how did that come about. Well, I have such great ex-colleagues who came thru for me and current bosses and collegues who want me to go with them.

And since I managed to book the return flight on the Sunday instead of the Saturday, I'm getting an extra day in Newcastle and will stay in Heworth iwth my ex-landlady.

I'm hoping I won't get stuck any GNR cut-ff on the Sunday - gonna have to check the Metro website. And the Tesco website to see what we need to buy.
Oh I can't wait - good friends and good shopping, can it get any better?

my grand-dad died on june 3rd and it left me kind of reeling. it felt like i lost my footing. it's a weird feeling - he was 88 years old and lived a very fulfilling life, altho he did have his aches and pains. on june 10th we were due to go and see him for a long weekend. instead we got to have a long weekend saying goodbye to him.

in all of this we've recieved the news that my dad's cancer it still causing havoc and the medics can't say where it is or what's it doing to him other than it's showing up on scans. so in a couple of weeks' time he's due to have yet another full body scan to see where this cancer monster's hiding.

despite this it's an ok summer. i've been taking care of myself by doing a weight-loss course focusing on the mind more than counting calories. using cognitive behavioural therapy it's supposed to give you the tools to make consicous decisions about what you eat and the exercise you do. one month of group meetings and then a break for two months followed by two follow-up meetings in august and september. it's working in the way that i'm feeling support in this whole thing and that i've lost 4 kg. and it's making me more open about talking about it and being less emotional about it. (but on the other hand, it still feels hard to write about this on the swedish blogg, for some reason...)

and makes me cry at every little thing. the question "how are you?" got me in a right state today. she was very comforting and said that some people keep it all in and get an ulcer, others let it all out. she lets it all out and has no ulcer problems.

i've posted more pictures from iceland - i was more fascinated with the architecture than with the vulcanos, lava and tree-less horizon.
maybe next time will be more of those things...

on friday we had a bit of a bank holiday, we had thursday off because of the ascension of Christ (which i'm sure you all know and worship!).
friday then meant that most people stayed at home or at least not at work. for some reason, my boss had missed organising two people to go a conference to iceland on monday and had asked my team leader to go. he was huffing and puffing about having to go alone and i of course said " iceland, i've never been and wouldn't say no if asked" to which he then asked "what are you doing on sunday?".
well, we were already planning to feast on the gourmet weekend but i was able to book a flight that meant enjoying a satisfying hotel breakfast with EVERYTHING you might ever dream of wanting to eat - the home-made waffles will make me salivate for years to come - and a laid-back car journey to my parents who then drove me to the airport. catching a flight at 20.35 at night felt very weird, weirder still was arriving in reyjkavik at midnight local time and it being very much like day light. a bit like a dull rainy afternoon in october day light but still daylight.

i didn't get to bed until my time 3.30am but i'm feeling strangely upbeat. i'm gonna take a stroll round town now before the conference starts at 10am. I'm so excited i've already forgotten that i've got no idea about what i'm doing the presentation on, so if anyone's got any ideas about what to say about podcasting applications in the iphone send me telepathic inspiration because the overseas tariff is TOO expensive. i'm hoping the icelandic crisis will soften the blow on my economy as i'm hoping to get some shopping done as well.

we're celebrating our friend Maria who's passed her doctorate earlier in ther year by going away loads of us to a quaint hotel for a gourmet spa weekend.

I'm so looking forward to it. I won't even bother with the no carb diet i'm on - bread, here i come!

even tho i started the first hexagon in January 2008 it does feel better crocheting when it's warmer outside.
Crocheting with a 1,5 needle requires a certain something when it comes to concentration and stamina and I'm not really there yet, but I'm aiming to have at least 8 hexagons to sew together which will make up the table cloth.

why is it so hard to decide whether you're sick or not

i'm always dithering when i'm falling ill. should i really stay at home, can i miss work today, and so on.
it's the guilt of missing work that's making me dither, but what's the big deal? I just don't get it...
